In animal feed, fishmeal is used as a natural source of high-grade animal protein, of health-promoting oils, vitamins and minerals. Proven advantages include improvement of the health, well-being and productivity of the animals fed with fishmeal.
Small quantities of fishmeal have throughout the world been added for many decades to the compound feed of domestic animals. On account of its especially high protein content, fishmeal is from a nutritional point of view held to be a valuable component of feed stuff for pigs, poultry and fish in aquacultures as well as for cats and dogs. Just small quantities in the total feed (rarely more than 5 per cent in the case of pigs and poultry) will meet the requirements for essential amino acids.
These elementary substances which fishmeal contains in high degree and which are necessary for the formation of endogenic protein determine the value of this feed stuff and accordingly are the determining factors for the demand. In addition fishmeal contains a high proportion of poly unsaturated fatty acids which cover the need for essential fatty acids in the animals.
